Eight High School Latinas Awarded Scholarships
“It’s a great honor and privilege when community leaders support the leaders of tomorrow.” — Kathy Flores, Latino Generations Committee
On Tuesday, May 24, the Latino Generations Committee (LGC) held a scholarship reception at the Community Foundation for San Benito County. The LGC is dedicated to investing in the leadership, education, and culture of San Benito County’s Latino community.
At the event, the LGC awarded eight local high school seniors scholarship funds for their continued pursuit in achieving a higher education. Gabriela Rivera, Georgina Patino, Yumira Perez, Sheyla Pastrana, Natalie Delgado, Adrianna Guiterrez, and Maria Garcia Padilla have all been accepted at four-year universities and community colleges in California as a way to reach their career goals.
The night of the reception, the LGC heard the personal hardship each individual has encountered as a first-generation Latina in San Benito County. The committee members were astonished to see such young, courageous, and intellectual individuals that were willing to overcome many challenges and obstacles toward their pursuit of a college degree.
The committee members, along with Community Foundation board members, felt honored and privileged to support extremely motivated and determined individuals who aim to make a difference in the world. Thanks to Father Larry Betrozoff’s generous donation, eight scholarship recipients will begin their first year in college knowing they have support, not only from family, friends, and loved ones, but also from community leaders.
Kathy Flores, chair of the LGC and board member of the Community Foundation, said, “It’s a great honor and privilege when community leaders support the leaders of tomorrow.”
