Anna Dolores Perry Nursing Scholarship

This scholarship is dedicated in the memory of Dolores Perry. Dolores's family migrated to California from La Piedad in the State of Michoacán, Mexico. Dolores was the youngest of 11 and was born in Hanford, California. When Dolores was a young girl her family settled in Hollister. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from San Benito High School.

When the time came for Dolores to venture on her own, she knew the life she was raised in was not the life she wanted. Dolores had the opportunity to attend nursing school in San Francisco. The nursing program was harder than she thought, she quit school and came home. The head of the nursing program tried talking Dolores out of leaving, but Dolores didn't think she could complete the courses. Dolores went back to working in the fields alongside her parents. Dolores struggled with her decision, went back to San Francisco, and begged to be re-enrolled. The school could not accept her back, but they were able to help enroll Dolores into St. Mary's. Dolores didn't waste the opportunity and studied hard so she could obtain her goal of a better life.

Dolores started her nursing career at Hazel Hawkins Hospital on Monterey Street where she met her husband, Lloyd. Together, they raised 4 children and had a beautiful life. Dolores' nursing career spanned 50 years at Hazel Hawkins Hospital working the majority of the time on the Obstetrics (O.B.) floor. Dolores assisted in delivering hundreds of San Benito County babies, including one of her own grandchildren.
